Specialty Feature: Gastroenterology

In the world of commercial art, medical illustration is a specialized field. Within this field, however, there are a diverse range of different categories and disciplines: anatomy, cellular biology, botany, zoology, biotechnology, pharmacology, virology, and histology… The list is as inexhaustible as the field of science itself. With a series of special blogposts, we will celebrate several artists whose unique specializations help to cover this broad spectrum of subjects.

This week, Medical Illustration and Animation would like to highlight ten talented medical illustrators working in the field of Gastroenterology: Todd Buck, Body Scientific, Mica Duran, Adam Questell, David Bolinsky, Scott Bodell, MedDraw Studio, Jackie Heda, Mike Austin, and Karin Spijker.

With a background in advertising, marketing, education, and biological and anatomical sciences, it is my goal to create a unique solution to each client’s communication needs. My artistic journey started with a bachelor’s in Drawing, Painting, and Textile Design. Post-college, I dove into photo retouching, enhancing stills with creative flair and precision. Eventually, I spread my wings, bidding farewell to the 9-to-5 routine and diving headfirst into independent retouching. Then came the plot twist. My fascination with the scientific universe led me to bag a Master’s in Scientific Illustration. Not stopping there, I even picked up the ropes of 3D production for stills and animation – because who doesn’t love a dash of tech in their palette? Fast forward to today, I’m your scientific and medical illustration virtuoso, armed with a toolkit of versatile techniques. My mission? Helping publishers weave captivating life science narratives that dazzle without the stress of quality, reliability, or looming deadlines. ~ Karin Spijker
