In the world of commercial art, medical illustration is a specialized field. Within this field, however, there is a diverse range of different categories and disciplines: anatomy, cellular biology, botany, zoology, biotechnology, pharmacology, virology, and histology… The list is as inexhaustible as the field of science itself. With a series of special blog posts, we are celebrating several artists whose unique specializations help to cover this broad spectrum of subjects.

This month, Medical Illustration and Animation is proud to highlight ten talented medical illustrators working in the field of Dermatology:

Founded in 2011, Kryski Biomedia is a professional biomedical illustration and animation studio in Toronto, Canada, with team members who have expertise in anatomy, physiology, cellular biology, pathology, zoology, natural science, and data visualization.

Kryski Biomedia creates accurate and effective illustrations and animations for biological, medical, scientific and technical projects and publications, whether for print format (books, magazines, journals, pamphlets, posters, exhibits, etc.) or digital format (web, projection, DVDR).

Founder Diana Kryski is an award-winning visual communicator and has over 20 years of experience creating custom visuals for a variety of clients, including 13 years in the healthcare space. Diana received her Master’s degree in Biomedical Communications at the University of Toronto, where she was recognized for excellence in biomedical visualization, leadership, and professionalism.

Jim Kopp has been in the illustration business for over 25 years. He spent his early years as a draftsman and then went on to receive an Associates Degree in Technical Illustration and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology. This training, with the many years of experience, has provided him with the tools necessary to understand and communicate the most demanding technical subjects in graphic form.

John Karapelou is a Board-Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) providing high quality custom medical visual media production and consultation services for biotech startups (including investor outreach), pharmaceutical and medical product advertising & marketing, media production, medical & consumer publishing, and medical malpractice and personal injury litigation. He has been recognized throughout his career for achievements in medical art with awards from clients and peers, such as Art Direction Magazine, the Rx Club, the Society of Illustrators, The Art Directors Club of New Jersey, The Art Directors Club of Philadelphia, and the Association of Medical Illustrators. Formerly Chief Medical Illustrator at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York, NY then later served appointments as Clinical Adjunct Instructor for the Program in Medical Illustration at The Ohio State University and Assistant Professor of Biomedical Art at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Audra Geras is an internationally recognized, multiple award-winning biomedical artist with degrees in both biology and visual biocommunications from the University of Toronto. She heads Geras Healthcare Productions, a boutique visual biomedical communications studio specializing in the creation of innovative custom illustration and 3D animated videos. Audra is a visual storyteller dedicated to finding successful solutions to medical and scientific communication challenges with clear, accurate and beautiful visuals.

David Bolinsky is an accomplished and award-winning medical illustrator and animator whose ground-breaking career in digital animation spans 33 years. After holding the position of Senior Medical Illustrator at the Yale School of Medicine, David founded the world’s first digital medical animation company, Advanced Imaging, Inc., in 1984. In 2000, David co-founded XVIVO Scientific Animation. A two-time speaker at the TED Conference, in 2007 he presented the highly acclaimed animation “The Inner Life of a Cell.” David is a guest faculty member of Singularity University and affiliates, Future Medicine and the Exponential Medicine Conference, and an associate partner in the ‘Marie Curie Initiative’ with the University of Utrecht, Netherlands.

Jennifer Gentry is a Board Certified Medical Illustrator with award-winning work and over 20 years of experience in practice. She has illustrated two aesthetic and oncoplastic breast surgery textbooks and contributed extensively to more than 15 other scientific and surgery textbooks. Her work includes illustration for over 20 academic journals as well as patient education, medical devices, pharmaceutical, marketing, legal exhibits, and web/ onscreen. Jennifer’s work maintains a focus on graphic design, information design, and the function of aesthetics in effective communication.

“For more than two decades, I’ve worked as an independent medical artist. I’m a Certified Medical Illustrator, specializing in biomedical illustrations that provide engaging and educational views of science and nature. I use traditional and digital methods to construct images for a variety of publishing formats, including textbooks, pharmaceutical product advertisement, museum and medical-legal exhibits. My client list includes Google, Pfizer, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, IDEXX, and Purina.” ~ Laurie O’Keefe

KO Studios specializes in high-end medical illustrations and animations for the medical and biotech industries. Steve started the company under the name of StudiOh Medical art in 1992 and was joined by Myriam in 1998 when the company became KO Studios. Both illustrators graduated from the Medical College of Georgia’s Medical Illustration program and before starting their own company worked for other diverse institutions including Georgetown University, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Joan Beck Visual Communications, Krames Communication, Barrow Neurological Institute, and Arizona Heart Institute among others.

Lisa Clark is the president and principal creative for Clark Medical Illustration, a full-service bio-communications company in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. After attending the undergraduate program at Otis Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles, California, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. Lisa completed her Master of Arts degree in Biocommunications at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

In over 20 years of professional experience, Lisa has won many awards and honors, including a Vesalius Trust Research Grant, as well as the Award of Excellence and Certificate of Merit in Advertising from the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) annual salon. She is also a Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) and professional member of the AMI.

Lisa’s background includes experience in medical and scientific illustration for patient and professional education, advertising, web, interactive media design, art direction and technology project management.

“My goal is to create artwork that is accurate, informative and inviting.”

Molly Borman graduated in 1988 from Colorado State University with a Masters of Science in Anatomy and a specialization in Biomedical Illustration. She was a Staff Medical Illustrator at CSU’s Illustration and Communication service department, 1989-1990. From 1990 to the present Molly has been running her own biomedical illustration business.
