In the world of commercial art, medical illustration is a specialized field. Within this field, however, there is a diverse range of different categories and disciplines: anatomy, cellular biology, botany, zoology, biotechnology, pharmacology, virology, and histology… The list is as inexhaustible as the field of science itself. With a series of special blog posts, we will celebrate several artists whose unique specializations help to cover this broad spectrum of subjects.

This week, Medical Illustration and Animation would like to highlight ten talented medical illustrators working in the field of Biotechnology:

Cynthia is a certified medical illustrator and a Fellow of the Association of Medical Illustrators. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Colorado State University, in 1979, and a Master of Arts in Biomedical Illustration from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, in 1982. Her work focuses on the visual needs of pharmaceutical and biotech research for their investor and advertising markets, including large-scale illustrations for medical conference exhibitions and event and print collateral. She is known for creating striking visuals with clarity of message and a dramatic use of color.

Veronica Falconieri Hays is a Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) specializing in molecular and cellular visualization, including both still media and animation. Veronica illustrates and animates all things medical and scientific. Her research experience provides exceptional knowledge of protein structure and understanding of complex molecular and cellular subject matter. Prior to founding Falconieri Visuals in 2017, Veronica earned her MA in Medical and Biological Illustration from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After graduating, Veronica worked within a cryo-electron microscopy lab at the National Cancer Institute. She collaborated extensively with researchers as they discovered structures of biological molecules, and is a published author in several journals including Science and Cell.

KO Studios specializes in high end medical illustrations and animations for the medical and biotech industries. Steve started the company under the name of StudiOh Medical art in 1992 and was joined by Myriam in 1998 when the company became KO Studios. Both illustrators graduated from the Medical College of Georgia’s Medical Illustration program and before starting their own company worked for other diverse institutions including Georgetown University, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Joan Beck Visual Communications, Krames Communication, Barrow Neurological Institute, and Arizona Heart Institute among others.
