Elaine Kurie worked with a leading pharmaceutical company to create illustrations concerning antibiotic-resistant bacteria, an increasing threat to human health.

The illustration depicts three of several mechanisms bacteria use to acquire resistance genes: plasmid transfer, transfer of free DNA, and transfer by viral delivery.

The ease in which bacteria adapt to their environment and exchange DNA has led to an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria and underscores the need for effective infection control programs.
