‘Let’s play a game’ phrase isn’t gone, it is just starting to gain new dimensions, 3D dimensions. That’s what Drew Skillman and Patrick Hackett had in mind when they decided to upgrade the ancient game of chess by transferring it into virtual reality.
Though in the process of development they noticed one bug: when moving chess pieces they were leaving the traces of light behind. And that was the turning point for the two developers when they realized that the bug was a potential feature for a virtual reality app for artists. The idea of drawing in three dimensions was born.
In April 2017, the app received its name ‘Tilt Brush’ and Google’s attention who bought this application. From an innovative project drawing in virtual reality Google Tilt Brush has changed into a sophisticated tool for drawing, painting, even sculpting in space. It was released in April as a free add-on to the new HTC Vive, an $800 virtual reality system.
The whole experience looks pretty weird to the onlookers. There is a virtual headset and two controllers with one playing a role of a palette and other being a pen or brush. Over the past year, Google has invited people to try Tilt Brush and share their experience of working and creating in a virtual reality set (see video) anything from performance art and virtual sculpture to industrial prototyping.

Though it’s just fun and games compared to the possibilities of Tilt Brush in the realm of video games. A team of artists and game developers explored this option at Global Game Jam 2018, a game development hackathon, and created a virtual reality game in just 48 hours.
‘Pac Tac Atac’ sends you on a space adventure where you are being thrown to an alien planet with not so hospitable aliens. And to defend yourself you have cans of paint that arm you with unlimited possibilities as you can ‘draw’ anything to fight them all.
