David Killpack of Illumination Studios was honored to receive the Max Brödel Award of Excellence in Instructional Tone from the Association of Medical Illustrators at this year’s annual meeting. The winning piece was created to enlighten the viewer about the reconstruction of prehistoric creatures from fossil remains. The example of the “Woodbine Croc”, a new species in the process of being described lived in the mid-Cretaceous of north Texas along what was then the coastal delta of the Western Interior Seaway. Skull fragments from a variety of specimens of several age classes were laser scanned and assembled in a digital 3D space. The flesh was then applied using modern crocodilians for reference as well as related species from the fossil record. The entire reconstructed animals was at least 7 meters (nearly 23 feet) in length!
