Fun Wall Mural
I was asked by Lallapalooza in Downtown Monterey to come up with a wall mural that could be rendered using Chalk Ink markers on a chalk board wall. As a Scientific Illustrator, it’s my job to come up with visual ways to show ideas. Although this project was not related to science it still challenged me to use my creative problem solving skills. I was asked to come up with an image that gave a downtown “feel”: something that was high energy and fun. I also needed to include the restaurants logo, and the words “DownTown,” “Burgers,” “Pizza” and “Cocktails.” I also needed to use bright, high energy colors. My first step was to figure out what the chalk ink markers could do. I remember using similar markers back when I was putting the specials up on the menu board as a hostess at Cindy’s Az Cafe in High School. I had drawn fun food items but I had never considered doing anything remotely as detailed as the work in my portfolio. I was happy to find on the chalk ink web site that I could use the markers to shade and blend to a level that I didn’t expect. With that in mind, I started brainstorming ideas of how I could show everything I was asked to show. As a result, this is the color composition that I proposed to Lallapalooza:
I used myself as the initial model in order to get the basic body shape correct. Next I altered the body size, hair and face as needed to make it look nothing like me. The dress and shoe colors where chosen to mimic the olive in the Lallapalooza logo. The glass is a vintage cocktail glass which is currently very much so in style and can be found being used at the hippest bars. I also wanted to pay homage to the vintage french liquor ads that this was inspired by.
